Unity in the body of christ

What is it?

When the subject of unity in the body of Christ comes up it is usually met with mixed emotions. Somewhere deep down inside we all realize that if Jesus came to establish one church which is His body then we should ideally have unity. Unfortunately efforts to establish unity are often frustrated by differing doctrines and paradigms. They are also frustrated by leaders that are unable to cooperate and work together. Those that have witnessed efforts and pushes towards ecumenicalism have rightly called it a manmade counterfeit to the true unity that God wants to establish. It is man's attempt to get others to agree upon what man believes. So why is unity in the body of Christ part of our message? Unity will be necessity as we move into the future, a vehicle by which otherwise impossible agendas will be accomplished. We believe that true unity in the body of Christ will mean that a company of people arrives at the place where they choose to believe what God believes. This will only come about as a result of a move of God's Spirit in the last days.

Two Types of Unity

Unity of the Spirit and Unity of the Faith

When addressing the subject of unity it is important to distinguish between two types of unity that are detailed in the Scripture. The first is the unity of the Spirit (Ephesians 4:3) and the second is the unity of the faith (Ephesians 4:13). The unity of the Spirit is the unity that is established by the work of the Holy Spirit through salvation. When we are saved we are all baptized into one body by the Spirit of God. This creates a spiritual unity that exists between all true believers. In Paul's epistle he exhorts us to maintain this unity in the bond of peace. We must work to be at peace with our brothers and sisters in Christ even when it becomes difficult.

The second type of unity goes far beyond what is established through the work of salvation. The unity of the faith is when the whole body of Christ begins to believe what God believes. This includes believing what God believes about Himself and also what God believes about our identity. This unity of the faith is not prophesied to occur until the last days when the five-fold ministry has finished its job. This message is the thrust of Ephesians 4:11-16. According to Scripture coming to the unity of the faith will coincide with the body of Christ coming to full maturity. It is this agenda that we at BRIDE Ministries are interested in promoting.
